The album A Gangsta’s Pain is just like reading the journal of Moneybagg Yo’s life. He talks to us about his upbringing from the lows to highs; he has been through to the rise of his success.
In the Memphis rapper’s album, the collaborations “Hard for the Next” featuring Future and “One of Dem Nights” with Jhene Aiko show that Moneybagg Yo is versatile, by showing us his range with a softer melody to his rap style on top of having hard blunt bars.
The Memphis rapper’s other gold hit song “Time Today” is about his girlfriend Arianna Fletcher who is in the music videos of a couple of songs on the album as the women that he loves.
In Moneybagg Yo’s music video of the hit song “Time Today” he jokes about comparing himself to William, one of the main characters from the early 2000’s series “Girlfriends”. He did this to be funny, playful, and trolling about having plenty of women around him. Due to having a good sense of humor the music video had over 20 million views on YouTube. Moneybagg Yo gained great success with this promo music video. He shared with his fans that the financial deals received after this music video led to him getting paid $125,000 for every live show.
In Moneybagg Yo’s collaboration song “Certified Neptune’s” with Pharrell they sounded well together going back and forth on the track, as if they had done a song together before. This however was their first collaboration. The title itself speaks to the relationship that they both have and influence they have on each other. “That’s a living legend. I took at it like he’s passing the torch, he’s rocking with it.” Moneybagg Yo says in a recent interview with Houston BMW Studios. Pharrell mentioned that Moneybagg Yo is his favorite rapper right now in an interview.
The song “Shottas (Lala)” brings the Memphis rapper out of Tennessee to the tropical island of Kingston, Jamaica. Bringing concepts and vibes from the 2002 Jamaican crime film “Shottas”. He wanted us to understand not only how much money he has but what he did to get to where he is at.
The 22 songs on Moneybagg Yo’s album, - “A Gangsta’s Pain”, along with the seven artists featured throughout played a key role in the Memphis rapper telling us about his journey and what he has been through. The three songs “Free Promo” featuring Polo G and Lil Durk, “GO” featuring his own artist BIG30, and the album’s opening song “Memphganistan” featuring the Dallas singer Kaash Paige – in those three songs you feel the pain Moneybagg Yo is speaking to in the album’s title. Each song goes into detail on where pain has shown up on different parts of Moneybagg Yo’s life.
“I got 8 songs gangsta, 8 songs pain. Even if you do not like the gangsta you will like the pain. If you do not like the pain, you will like the gangsta. So, I still win all the way around. I am finding myself in my craft. I’m finding myself more and more.” Moneybagg Yo says in an interview. He wants people vibe to his songs for those who resonate with the pain vibe and those who resonate with the gangsta vibe.
A Gangsta’s Pain is proof that Moneybagg Yo is one of the best rappers in the rap game. The versatility he has and how he can switch from having a melody to having a cold hard-hitting bar for his song is unique.
Moneybagg Yo seems to just be getting started with his career. With this being his fourth studio album, he recently said in his interview later in his career he is coming out with an album that is completely all melodies because that is what his fans like.
